Full Moon Ritual for Letting Go: Release What No Longer Serves You

Why the Full Moon Supports Letting Go

The full moon is the brightest phase of the lunar cycle. It illuminates what has been hidden. Emotions rise. Patterns become visible. It is not a coincidence that people feel more intense during the full moon.

This illumination makes it the ideal time for release. What is ready to leave you will surface now. Your job is to let it go instead of clinging to it.

This ritual is designed for anyone who needs to release something heavy — a relationship, a fear, a self-doubt, a pattern that keeps repeating.

What You Will Need for This Ritual

A piece of paper and a pen. A fire-safe bowl or a body of water (a sink, a bathtub, a river). A candle, preferably white or black. Optional: sage, palo santo, or incense for cleansing.

That is it. You do not need expensive tools. The power of this ritual comes from your intention, not your shopping list.

Step 1: Prepare Your Space and Yourself

Find a quiet space where you will not be interrupted. Light your candle. Take three deep breaths.

Call in any guides, ancestors, or spiritual support you work with. You can say something simple like "I ask for protection and guidance as I release what no longer serves me."

Step 2: Write Down What You Are Releasing

On your paper, write down everything you are ready to release. Be specific. "I release the fear that I am not lovable." "I release my attachment to how my last relationship ended." "I release the belief that I have to struggle to succeed."

Do not hold back. Write until nothing else comes. This page is for your eyes only. You are not performing. You are purging.

Step 3: Read Your List Aloud

Hold the paper in both hands. Read it out loud. Your voice gives power to the words. Even if you whisper, even if your voice shakes. Say the words.

After you finish reading, say: "I release these things under the light of the full moon. I thank them for the lessons they taught me. They no longer serve my path. I let them go with love."

Step 4: The Burning or Water Release

Two options. If you are using fire: carefully light the paper with your candle and place it in the fire-safe bowl. Watch it burn. As the smoke rises, imagine your burdens lifting.

If you are using water: rip the paper into small pieces. Drop them into running water — a sink, a toilet, a river. Watch them wash away. Imagine the water carrying your release far from you.

Whichever method you choose, do not rush. Witness the release.

Step 5: Cleanse Your Energy

After the release, cleanse your energy. Smoke cleanse yourself with sage or palo santo. Or wash your hands and face with cold water. Or take a full salt bath.

This step is important. You have opened an energetic door. Closing it intentionally keeps you grounded.

Step 6: Set an Intention for What Comes Next

Now that you have made space, fill it with something good. On a fresh piece of paper, write one or two intentions for what you want to invite in.

"I invite peace into my heart." "I welcome clarity about my next steps." "I open myself to love that matches my growth."

Fold this paper and keep it somewhere safe. Under your pillow. On your altar. In your wallet.

What to Expect After the Ritual

Do not be surprised if you feel emotional in the days after the ritual. Release can stir things up before it settles them down. That is normal.

Some people feel lighter immediately. Others feel raw for a day or two. Both responses are valid. Be gentle with yourself.

The ritual is a declaration. The universe responds to declarations. Trust that the release has been received. The full moon will wane, and with it, the weight you let go.
