How to Cleanse Crystals: 7 Methods That Work for Any Stone

By · · 6 min read

Crystals absorb energy the way a sponge absorbs water. They pick up your moods, the moods of everyone who touches them, and the atmosphere of the rooms they sit in. After a while that buildup makes them feel dull, heavy, or just off. Cleansing resets them. It is the crystal equivalent of a good night's sleep, and every stone needs it eventually.

How often should you cleanse?

A good rule is once a month on the full moon, plus any time a stone feels heavy or after an intense situation where you used it for protection. If you wear the same crystal daily, it needs more attention than one that sits on an altar. Your hands know. If a stone feels dull when you pick it up, it is asking for a reset.

Smoke cleansing: the universal method

Smoke works for every stone, which makes it the safest place to start. Light sage, palo santo, or cedar, and pass the crystal through the smoke while you hold your intention in mind. A few passes are enough. Picture the smoke washing the stone clean. This is also the method I use for a brand new crystal the day it arrives, before it ever touches my altar.

Moonlight: gentle and reliable

Leave your crystals on a windowsill or outside overnight during the full moon. The moonlight cleanses and recharges at the same time, and every stone tolerates it, even the delicate ones. That makes it my default recommendation. If you want to combine cleansing with intention setting, the new moon works for planting fresh goals instead.

Running water: with caution

Water is powerful but picky. Hold the stone under running water, a tap or a clean stream, until it feels clear. Only do this with hard stones: quartz, amethyst, citrine, agate. Soft or porous stones will suffer. Selenite dissolves in water, malachite is toxic in water, and halite is literally salt, so it just washes away. When in doubt, skip the water method and use smoke or moonlight.

Salt: the oldest cleanser

Sea salt is a classic. Bury the crystal in a bowl of dry salt overnight, then brush the salt off gently. Dry salt is much safer than salt water, which damages many stones the same way tap water does. One warning: salt can scratch softer stones, so use a soft cloth or a bowl and never rub the salt in. Rose quartz and other soft stones are better off with smoke or sound.

Sound cleansing

Sound moves through everything, which is why it works so well on crystals. A singing bowl, a bell, or a tuning fork held near the stone will vibrate the old energy loose. Ring the bowl a few times and let the sound fade on its own. You will feel the stone go quiet. Sound is safe for every type of crystal, which makes it a great choice for mixed collections.

Earth burial

Burying a stone in clean soil for a day or two returns it to its source. This is a deep cleanse, ideal for stones that have done heavy protective work. Use a potted plant if you do not have garden access, and mark where you buried the stone so you remember to dig it up. Stick to hardy stones like quartz and tumble stones for this method. Selenite and other soft stones do not enjoy the underground.

Selenite: the self cleaner

Selenite is the exception to every rule. It never needs cleansing itself, and it cleanses everything around it. Keep a selenite plate or wand and set other crystals on it overnight. It is the easiest method in this list and it doubles as a charging station, which is why most practitioners keep one on the altar permanently.

Set the intention after cleansing

Cleansing removes the old. Intention sets the new. Hold the freshly cleaned stone and tell it what you want it to do for you. Protect this space. Support my sleep. Help me speak with compassion. A crystal with a clear job performs it far better than a crystal that is just pretty on a shelf, and the act of speaking the intention bonds you to the stone.

Start simple. Full moon moonlight once a month, smoke when a stone feels heavy, and a selenite plate for daily maintenance. That routine covers most situations you will ever face. If you want to take your practice further, pair your cleansing with a fuller cleansing ritual for your space, and when you are ready to use your stones for deeper insight, a tarot reading can show you which energies need attention. Your crystals will feel lighter in your hand, and you will feel the difference when you work with them.
